The Antioxidant Power of Quercetin

Updated: Jul 19, 2022

What exactly is quercetin? Quercetin is a powerful antioxidant that is being studied more and more for its wide range of promising health benefits. Quercetin belongs to a group of plant nutrients called flavonoids. Besides giving fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors, flavonoids are renowned for counteracting free radicals (unstable atoms) in the body, which are understood to accelerate illness and aging when left unchecked.

What have researchers learned about quercetin?

In a comprehensive study published by the National Institute of Health in 2020, quercetin was found to have positive effects on several types of illness. Researchers confirmed that quercetin supports healthy cell growth, actively suppresses abnormal cell growth, and “exerts a marked effect on immunity and inflammation”, pointing to a lower risk of infection and cancer. It was also noted that quercetin had the ability to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar, an encouraging sign for diabetes research. Regular quercetin consumption has been shown to improve heart health by lowering systolic blood pressure and by stabilizing angiotensin, a blood protein which controls blood vessel constriction. But wait - there’s more! Quercetin is also being studied for its potential to improve neurological diseases, control prostate inflammation, and even help with allergy symptoms.

Which foods contain the most quercetin?

Many fruits, vegetables, tea, wine, and grains contain quercetin. You’ll find the highest amounts in onions, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, apples, grapes, berries/cherries, and citrus fruits. Buckwheat, red wine, and black tea, bilberry and ginkgo are also rich in quercetin.
