Heavy Metal and Environmental Toxin Testing

Fatigue, brain fog and aches that never quite resolve are rarely blamed on what has quietly accumulated in the body. Heavy metals and environmental exposure are usually the last thing anyone tests for, which is why so many people carry them for years without knowing.

Hair analysis to identify heavy metal and environmental exposure, with a personalized plan from Dr. Kathleen Jones, DC and ND. Sample collected at home.

Symptoms that sometimes trace back to toxic load

Heavy metals and environmental exposures are rarely the first thing anyone looks at. They tend to be considered only after everything else has been ruled out, which is why people often carry them for years:

  • Fatigue that does not respond to rest or to better sleep

  • Brain fog, poor concentration and memory changes

  • Headaches with no clear pattern

  • Mood changes and irritability

  • Digestive problems that come and go

  • Joint and muscle aches

  • Skin changes and unexplained sensitivities

  • Recurring illness and slow recovery

These overlap with a great many other things, which is exactly why guessing is not good enough. As Dr. Jones puts it, "I won't guess about your health."

Where exposure actually comes from

Most exposure is ordinary and cumulative rather than dramatic. Lead in older paint and plumbing. Mercury in some fish and in dental work. Cadmium in cigarette smoke and industrial air. Arsenic in some water supplies and foods. Aluminium in cookware and everyday products. None of these announce themselves, and the body stores what it cannot clear.

Water is worth its own mention. If you have never had yours tested, it is a reasonable place to begin, and what is actually in your tap water is not always what you would expect.

How we test

Hair analysis

A hair sample shows what the body has been accumulating over time rather than what is circulating today. It is the most direct way to uncover heavy metal toxins and mineral imbalances, and it is collected at home and sent straight to the lab. Metals and minerals are read together, because an excess of one often sits alongside a deficiency in another.

Electro Dermal Screening

Also called Biomeridian testing, this is a noninvasive method that assesses the energy meridians of the body and gives insight into organs and glands including the adrenals, immune system and digestive system. Once imbalances are identified, we test which nutritional supports work best for your body and build a personalized protocol from the results.

Comprehensive blood panel

Establishes a baseline of biomarkers and shows how the rest of the system is coping: liver and kidney function, immune markers, and vitamin and mineral status. See the full range of diagnostic testing for what else may apply.

What about mold?

Mold in the home is one of the most commonly missed causes of strange, hard to trace symptoms. Over the years Dr. Jones has seen many patients with unexplained complaints who turned out to have a mold problem where they live or work. If your symptoms improve when you are away from home and return when you go back, that pattern is worth investigating before anything else.

Why "normal" results may not mean healthy

Most lab reports compare your results against a "normal range." If you fall inside it you are usually told you are normal, which is easily confused with being healthy.

Normal ranges are calculated by each individual laboratory, not a central agency, using roughly 100 to 200 people who had testing done recently. Most of those people were being tested precisely because they already had a health problem. Their results are averaged, and the range extends two standard deviations either side.

So a normal result means only that you are not yet as unwell as the people used to build the range. With accumulated exposure this matters more than usual, because levels can sit inside a range and still be far from where you want them.

What happens after testing

When results are in, Dr. Jones prepares a personalized report with every result, an explanation of what each one means, and a complete plan of the nutrients, vitamins, dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments that support your body's own clearance pathways. It is built through the Science Based Nutrition program and includes supplement recommendations with dosages specific to your findings, age, sex and weight.

Where the picture is broader than exposure alone, this work sits alongside gut health testing and root cause functional medicine, since clearance depends heavily on how well digestion and the liver are working.

Support is ongoing. A health coach works alongside you, and Healthie gives you 24/7 access and unlimited messaging with your doctor between appointments.

Getting started

  • Book a consultation. Virtual and phone appointments are available.

  • Collect your hair sample at home. It is posted directly to the lab.

  • Review your results together. With a written plan you keep.

  • Retest to track change. Results are compared side by side against your baseline.

How is heavy metal testing done?

Through hair analysis. A small sample is collected at home and sent directly to the lab, where metals and minerals are read together. Electro Dermal Screening and a comprehensive blood panel may be used alongside it depending on your case.

Why hair rather than blood?

Blood shows what is circulating now. Hair shows what the body has been accumulating over a longer period, which is more useful when the concern is exposure built up over years rather than a recent event.

Do I need to travel for the test?

No. The hair sample is collected at home and posted to the lab. Consultations are virtual or by phone, so nothing about this requires travel.

What are the most common sources of exposure?

Lead in older paint and plumbing, mercury in some fish and dental work, cadmium in cigarette smoke and industrial air, arsenic in some water supplies and foods, and aluminium in cookware and everyday products. Exposure is usually gradual rather than a single event.

Could mold in my home be causing my symptoms?

It is more common than most people expect and frequently missed. A useful clue is whether symptoms ease when you are away from home and return when you go back. That pattern is worth investigating.

What happens if the test shows elevated levels?

Dr. Jones prepares a personalized report explaining what each result means, along with a plan covering nutrients, dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments that support your body's own clearance pathways. Retesting later shows change side by side against your baseline.

My other results came back normal. Should I still look at this?

Possibly. Normal ranges are built from people who were already being tested for a health concern, so a normal result means you are not yet as unwell as that group. Accumulated exposure often sits inside a range while still affecting how you feel.
