How To Support Your Brain

Hello All,

More often than not, when you go to the doctor they ask you about your physical health (what you’ve been eating and drinking, how many times a week you exercise, etc…) but what about our brains? Our brains are the powerhouses of our whole bodies and play THE largest role in our overall health. However, when it comes to mainstream medicine, the brain is often an afterthought, only to be dealt with once something has already gone wrong. In my blog post today I’d like to talk about what we can be doing throughout our lives to support and nourish our most vital organ, the brain.

Did you know that the brain is comprised of over 60% fat, and is one of the fattiest organs in the whole body? One vital thing you can be doing to help promote a healthy brain is having a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are important to a myriad of biological functions and have a (continually growing) list of health benefits. One great source of omega-3s comes from your diet and eating foods such as fish, vegetable oils (avocado and olive oil primarily), nuts, seeds, and dark leafy vegetables. However, taking an omega-3 supplement can be a great way to enhance an already well-rounded diet’s positive effect on the brain.

That said, not all omega-3 supplements are created equal. When looking for an omega-3 supplement, avoid the large brand names, as those tend to sit on shelves for months on end and lose their restorative properties in the meantime. Check the label and make sure that your omega-3’s have a combination of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), both of which can help to support brain function and heart health, and each one provides a unique benefit to the body and brain. I would highly recommend the Metagenics brand fish oil pills, available on our website.

In addition to eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids and taking a fish oil supplement, we offer comprehensive bain testing that you can do from the luxury of your own home. If you are looking for more information about how to best support your brain please reach out to us as there is an endless array of individualized ways that we can help you in promoting and continuing the life long journey of supporting your brain’s health.

Best,

Dr. Jones
